Overcoming Adversity
Read Erica’s, Dominick’s, and Austin’s stories in the article titled, “Fox Valley high school students overcome adversity to earn diplomas” at the following link: http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/aurora-beacon-news/news/ct-abn-high-school-grads-st-0524-20150523-story.html After reading about their three different challenges, and thinking about the different types of challenges you have read in both the blogging articles and the Ted talk about Amy Purdy, what is a common theme you have seen in the way people deal with challenges faced? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
One thing that I noticed about how all of these people faced their challenges is that they had some kind of sport or hobby that they loved. I think that that sport or hobby is one of the things that kept them going and helped keep their mind off of their challenges. Another thing that I noticed is they all took a while to get used to whatever was helping them surpass the challenge such as Amy's new legs or Austin's new kidney. I think that even though it took them a while to get used to that, that it all turned out good for all of these people. All of them no matter what their challenge was, they found out what they had to do to overcome it and they did it.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I realized about these three people is no matter how hard there challenge became they still kept going until they couldn't anymore. I noticed that we need to sleep up and don't push our problems on other people. We need to take responsibility for our actions and challenges so that we can overcome them ourselves.
ReplyDeleteOne big theme people face is putting therselves down an example would be
ReplyDeleteif a kid had diabetes he would keep talking about himself. Even with Amy
new leg at first she had beat herself up about it then she had to think of other
creative ways to walk such as her assembling her new leg of of parts she never
gave up she keeped going and she accomplished her goal to become a champion
such as Austin's new kidney even with struggles they overcame the impossible.
One thing that I noticed about these three people is that they didn't let their challenges get in the way of the things that they wanted to accomplish. They all wanted to graduate high school on the right time and they wanted to succeed and that motivated them to keep going. Finally, in the end, all three of them did succeed from the motivation that they got from others. We shouldn't let our challenges stop us from our goals, and we should push ourselves to accomplish those goals.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed about the three people facing adversity is that they didn't let their challenge get in the way of what they wanted to accomplish. Also, I noticed that they all had an activity to help them overcome their challenge like swimming, baseball, etc. In some cases it took a while to get used to whatever helped overcame their challenge like when Amy Purdy had to get used to her new legs or when Austin had to get used to his new kidney. No matter what the challenge is they all overcame their challenge with help
ReplyDeleteA common theme I've seen people use to deal with challenges is that they didn't let their challenges stop them from accomplishing their goal. They worked hard and never gave up on their goal no matter what the odds are. Also, once they accomplish their goals they don't stop there they continue their dreams and their lives.
ReplyDeleteA common theme that I have seen between the people facing adversity is that they didn't let their challenges get in the way of being able to succeed. They stayed positive about a terrible situation and made the best of it. Overall, I feel that the people that came over their adversity only succeed because of a positive attitude and a determination to reach their goal.
ReplyDeleteA common theme that all three of the high school students faces were their determination. All of them had the choice to give up and call it quits, yet them persevered and accomplished their goals. A common point that inspires me that all of them displayed was that anything is possible when you set your mind to it.
ReplyDeleteA common theme between the three students was they didn't let their disability or lose in interest get in their way. Even though Ferrer lost interest she didn't give up. This shows that they were not going t give up on their goals to graduate high school.
ReplyDeleteA common theme I have seen in the way people deal with challenges is that they do not let their struggles keep them from reaching their goals. They all wanted to achieve something in a sport, hobby, or in school, and they used their activities as motivation to keep going forward. Even when they easily could of given up, they stayed determined and focused on the positive points throughout their challenges.
ReplyDeleteA common theme between all these three high school students are whatever they were facing they did not lose hope in them. All three of them believed their selves that they can achieve their goal with feeling confident and with encouragement. All in all, I personally believe with having hope, and confident anybody can breakthrough their obstacles and reach their goals.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed about the three students is that their family supported them, no matter what the odds were. They also had the the mentality that your goals never go off track because of a challenging obstacle. The goal is only set slightly farther and you have to find a way to break the obstacle and work harder to proceed towards the goal.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme between the high graduates and Amy Purdy is they both took it upon themselves to make sure this wasn't a bad experience for them selves. Amy made sure she can snowboard again, Erica made sure she graduated on time, Dominick is trying to follow his dream and play baseball, and Austin is fulfilling his dream by going to college for teaching special students. Everyone of these people are completing their dreams with major disabilities, this makes me wonder how many people are not fulfilling their dreams without disabilities.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme between the high school graduates and Amy Purdy is that even though they faced major challenges in their life, at the end, they didn't let it stop them from achieving their goals/dreams. They each had wonderful people supporting them and others helped them reach further to their dreams. No matter what disability they had, they got through it. The message basically is saying that even if life throws you obstacles, you have to keep working hard,,, because if you REALLY want it, you have to work for it.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme between the high schools students and Amy Purdy is that when they faced adversity they always persevered through it. They didn't let there major challenges get in the way of what they were trying to accomplish. Everyone that we read/heard about they always had someone helping them get through there adversity. The message is saying if something happens to you, you can still make the best out of it.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest thing between Amy Purdy and the 3 students we read about is they all had their parents to help them. They also had friends and neighbors and siblings to support them. Last of all they had sports to motivate them to overcome their challenges
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed about the three students was that they didn't let anything or anyone get in the way of doing what they wanted to do. They were optimistic about their situations. The message in all of these stories is that you have to go through obstacles to get to where you want to be.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading all of these articles I can say i noticed that none of the people let the obstacle in their way keep them from acheiving their goal or dream. Also, they all found a way around their situation. Like Amy's new legs or Austins new kidney. They all found out ways to get over the obstacle and live their lives as normal as possible.
ReplyDeletethe biggest theme was no matter how hard the task was they over came it with will power. people will find that very motivating. they all had something to look forward to
ReplyDeleteone thing was scouts two where sports and one was school.
One thing I noticed from the articles is that even though they had an obstacle in their lives they still overcame it and did what they loved. They didn't let their challenge get in the way of their lives. They were determined and still do what they want to do. They all want to live their lives normal as possible.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that in each of the articles the people all had challenges that they needed to overcome in order to reach their goals. Take Amy for example, whenever she got those fake legs, she didn't let that get in her way of snowboarding and traveling the world. I think that in all of these stories, even though everyone had to face great challenges, they didn't let it get in their way and they overcame their diversity to live their life like they want it to be.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed was they didn't let what was going on in there life affect them. They all also have a hobby, or sport that they really love to do. They have there family and friends to support them all the threw. They all had an obstacle to get over and they did that.
ReplyDeleteThe common thing that kept coming up each time I read the artificial was that each had a challenge they all had to get over. For example Austin had to get a new kidney but he didn't let that get in the way. Plus it like with Amy Purdy she didn't the fact that she didn't get in the way of what she loves to do. I think that we all have challenges in life but we all can find a way to get over it we just have to look hard enough.
ReplyDeleteThe thing they had in common is that they all had trouble with school. Erica had trouble because she was lazy and didn't really care about school. With Dominick he had a disease called Addison's disease. Austin was a swimmer with something wrong with his kidney. I feel very bad for these people and wish I could do something to help them get better.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that all these people have on thing in common that is they all have overcomed adversity and never thought about the first only about the best.Amy Purdy overcame it by being able to switch shoe sizes to fit the clearance rack and could be what ever height she wanted.Austin overcame his adversity by being a very social person and not thinking about the worst. So the pattern I see is that all of them overcame adversity by thinking about the best.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme in these stories is that they all had some difficulty that they overcame. Erica had her councilor, Dominick had his baseball, Austin had his drama class, and Amy had snowboarding. They all had one thing to help themselves over come their challenge. They had something happen that made them feel defeated. They almost gave up, but they found someone/something to help them get past that. All of their challenges made them stronger not weaker.
ReplyDeleteOne thing i realized is that although the people had to face a hard challenge, be it disease, or losing limbs, they never gave up. They all found ways to cope with it, such as sports, or being very social. All of the people who had these challenges were very hard-working, performing better than most others even in their condition. They all took the best out of the situation, rather than thinking of it badly.
ReplyDeleteThe theme of the story is that these people never gave up when they had hard challenges to overcome. They found ways to help with their challenges and to keep them going. The people had to work harder than normal for success because of their conditions. They all took the positives things and made them better by working harder.
ReplyDeleteAustin, Lukowski, and Erica all had major adversities that they had to overcome. They were all similar to Amy because they all took the positive out of the negative and worked hard and turned there lives around. They are all people that didn't give up on what they liked or did best, they all found a way around there problems and make things happen. However bad Austin,Lukowski, or Erica's problems got they did whatever they could do to make it happen
ReplyDeleteAustin, Lukowski, and Erica all had problems to over come. They all had something in common with Amy Purdy because they all had to over come challenges to get to their final goal. None of them ever gave up. They keep pushing themselfs. They all did whatever they could to get over their problems. And it worked, they all reached their goal.
ReplyDeleteAustin, Lukowski, and Erica faced a really hard challenge in their life. The common theme I saw in each story was that each kid had a hobby that they where passionate about. They didn't let their challenges get in the way of the things they love to do. All three of the kids had some one or several people to help them get through the challenges too. They where never alone and they never gave up.
ReplyDeleteOne thing in common that I have noticed on how all these people face their adversity is that none of them ever stopped trying or lost focus of they're goals. For example, most people in Erica's situation would have just given up and said that they couldn't do anything about it, but she didn't. Most people in Dominick's situation would not have cared for school in they're condition, but he did. People in Austin's situation would have been distracted by all the medical challenges and would have not cared for school, but he didn't. All these people have in common the fact that they do not lose focus on they're goals, and that is what separates them from the rest. That is why they succeed.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme that i noticed in all 3 stories were that they all played a sport. All 3 of them faced a challenge and it did not stop them from reaching there goals. They all had some people helping them get through there challenges no matter how hard it was. They worked really hard at what they did and they were not going to stop no matter how hard things got.
ReplyDeleteone thing they have in common, is that they all have a hobby that is pushing them to work harder, and overcome their challenge. They didn't give up because they had that hobby to push them to work harder. Another thing I noticed is that they all took a little time to get used to their challenge. for example amy took a long time trying to find new legs that she could snowboard in. instead of giving up, she invented her one legs that she could snowboard in. Because of their motivation and dedication, they learned to overcome there adversity.
ReplyDeleteA common theme I noticed is that all these people had a dream, they all had people who supported them, and they all wanted to give up at some time. These people never gave up they were fighters who had a goal in life, they wanted to be someone in life, and they all wanted to inspire us and make the people they love proud! These people helped us understand that just because something seems to hard or looks to hard you can always complete it or make it work.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I noticed most about these three people is they all had a dream that kept them going even know they had the most difficult challenges to face. Even though they faced the most difficult challenges they still pulled themselves together everyday, got up and had the motivation to work on their dream and not let the disability or distraction stop them. These people show us through their challenges and meeting their goals, that we can succeed no matter how hard something is or looks.
ReplyDeleteA common theme noticed by all these people is they never gave up and they kept striving to get what they wanted even if it was a difficult challenge. Even with a disability they still never gave up and had motivation to get to their number 1 goal. We can learn from these people, whenever something is hard and we don't think we can do it, just think back and remember this story because it gives others motivation to do other things.
ReplyDeleteThe common theme that I noticed was each person had a challenge to over come. Like Amy she lost both of her legs but still did what she loved. Also Erica almost failed all her classes but with all the help she ended up not.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed is that they all had sompthing to work for. Also, they had someone to encourage them like Erica had her counsler who guided her in the right direction. Also, Domanik had his baseball to work twards and get better at and he overcame adversity to be able to play baseball.
ReplyDeleteThe similarity between the three high school students and Amy Purdy is that you cant go anywhere in life without a little push. Amy Purdy and the 3 students all had someone to help give them that push that they needed. I found it most common when all the students and even Amy Purdy, they all had a challenge to face and they all overcame their challenges too!

ReplyDeletethe three similarities between the three high school students is that they first started out not so strong. They all gave up after a while then they started to be more confident in themselves. they overcame there fears of moving forward in life.

ReplyDeleteThe similarities between all of these young students is that they all overcame their challenges by all focusing on something, they all had their fears. But with being faithful in thier family and their doctors to help them get through it. and it doesn't matter what you like to do, but with anything we like to do it should bring us happiness. Like say I got in a car accident and got paralyed, I would still fish because it's what I love.
ReplyDeletethe similarities between all of these high school students and Amy purdy is that they all have had challenges in their live, but by focusing on something good they were able to not focus on the negative in the situation.
ReplyDeleteOne thing i noticed was that they all had challenges to face. And before long they all faced their challenges. they put back all of their negative situations.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that the people didn't let their disabilities get in front of their everyday challenges. It gave other people hope. This shows that determination can overcome almost anything.
ReplyDeletethe resibulanc between them are that they were both failing in something. And they both came back to help them and many others. They also never gave up on there self which is good in a program that they have started.
ReplyDeletethe teens overcame adversity even with challenges ahead of them and they didn't care about the challenges and they did what they wanted to do in their life.
ReplyDeleteThe main similarity is that they overcame adversity to reach what they desired. High school is challenging by itself, add what they had to go through and it's nearly impossible, but they overcame their problems and got their diplomas. From my point of view they've fought a war and won, and their hero's.
