Assignment #3 - Edgar Allan Poe - due 11/24 by 7am

Solve the mystery…

After the death of Poe’s wife Virginia in 1847, Poe was deeply saddened.  Poe continued to work, but suffered from poor health and financial issues.  On September 27, 1849, Poe was supposedly on his way to Philadelphia. On October 3rd, Poe was found in great distress in Baltimore.  He was taken to Washington College Hospital and later died on October 7th.  Poe’s last words were, “Lord, help my poor soul.”  Poe’s cause of death was said to be “congestion of the brain,” although his actual cause of death has been the topic of much speculation.
Visit the website below to read the published theories surrounding Poe’s death.  Choose a theory you believe to be the cause of Poe’s death and comment on how Poe died and the evidence you read to support that theory. Comments should be at least 4-6 sentences in length.

    1. I think that poe's death was caused by chlorea. poe stated that "I have been so ill have and the chlorea or spasms quite as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen..."
poe was getting so ill that he could hardy handle the misery from the chlorea.
Poe also states that ''i have no desire to live" poe wanted to die so he didnt have to bear the pain any more.

  2. I think that Edgar A. Poe die from hallucinations caused by alcohol or drugs. In the article it says "(Poe) was found laboring under an attack of mania potu" Potu is a drug that effects the way glands in the body function. This could have resulted in a seizure, which ultimately lead to his dead later in the hospital. In conclusion, Poe cause of death is obviously drug related hallucinations.

  3. I think the cause of Poe's death was brain damage or a mental state. In the story, it states, "When he awakens, he trembles and sweats profusely until the following day. This is followed by “constant talking” with “imaginary objects.” He is unable to remember what has happened to him, where he has been, or what has become of his luggage." That evidence is showing that he did have issues and people have noticed them. But, there was more than 1 mental problem in this case.

  4. I think Poe's cause of death was cholera. In the article, Poe says, "I have been so ill" and he said that he can barely hold his pen. And he says that he has been having spasms. It has made him so paranoid that he predicted himself dying. And the additional stress made it even worse. Poe obviously died from cholera (or a similar disease) and stress.

  5. i think Poe's death was caused by alcohol and drugs. In the article it states'y, he was found near the Fourth ward polls laboring under an attack of mania a potu, and in a most shocking condition.this could mean he died from a seizure or he could have died from congestion of the brain which could be caused by drugs and alcohol .

  6. I think Poes death was caused by cholera 'I have been so ill- have had cholera or spams quite as bad'. But it said when he comsued alchol it caused him insanity and he had a brain tumor and a irregular heart beat. Those are the reasons i think Poe died.

  7. All of the theories are very interesting to think about. The one that I think is most likely is that he died of illness. I think both mental and physical illness took a toll on Poe. Elmira Shelton writes this about Poe: "He was very sad, and complained of being quite sick, I felt his pulse, and found he had a considerable fever"(Oct.11,1849). The letter written about Poe mentions him being sad as well as being sick. I think he was sad because of the many woman he had lost in his life time. While others many think of Poe as mad and insane I think he has his reasons and we should not be so quick to judge.

  8. i believe that Poe suffered from a brain tumor because it states that he had a very irregular heartbeat and could not consume alcohol so it was not from drugs or from consuming too much alcohol.

  9. I think that Poe died from cholera because he stated "I have been so ill--have had the cholera, or spasms quiet as bad"(Poe). He kind of expected to die before the trip was over. I also think he could of died from drugs and alcohol because he was having hallucinations. But no one really knows.

  10. I think Poe died from consuming to much alcohol and gone insane and died. " as he could not bear stimulants or tonics, without producing insanity,"(Poe Museum). He probably had consumed to much alcohol and went mad. Or he could have died from alcohol poisoning.

  11. I believe that Edgar A.Poe died from his inconstent heartbeat which urged him to drink which added to his irregular heartbeat led to death.I believe he felt urged to drink to kill himself because he believed he could not be raised up from his brain fever. So he felt like no person or thing could help him so he decided to kill himself by drinking himself to death. So he died from alchol.

  12. I believe that Edgar Allen Poe committed suicide by consuming too much alcohol on purpose. Poe did not want to live anymore because, as he states in his letter to his mother-in-law, " It is no use to reason with me now; I must die. I have no desire to live since I have done "Eureka." I could accomplish nothing more." (Poe). Edgar obviously wished to live no more and he was addicted to alcohol. This addiction, I believe, led to a fatal death. Poe was done with living in distress and he went over the edge and died. Edgar A. Poe died from a suicidal mission of overdosing on alcohol.

  13. My thoughts on Edgar A. Poe death theory is that he died from a serious Alchol problem and that lead to his death."I did not feel much hope". Many people think that when his wife pasted he was becoming suicidel and people didn't give much hope for Poe. Since he drank all the alcohol it would mess up his bladder and make him sick.

  14. I believe Poe died from a brain tumor because when he was writing the letter he said " I can barely hold the pen right now" which indicates that something is wrong with his brain like the doctor said. And when he would drink alcohol and go insane from it. It might of been caused from the brain tumor

  15. I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from Cholera, in the article it said that he he contracted cholera and week before so he could've gotten again. If Poe was drinking water that wasn't sanitary then he could've gotten it again. Also he could've died from drugs or alcohol.

  16. I believe Edgar Allen Poe died from the consumption of alcohol and drugs." Poe is found in the bar-room of the public house, dressed in clothes so unlike his own that a friend barely recognized him. Poe is unable to speak but mutters incoherently. Unable to walk, he is carried out of the building." The evidence of him consuming alcohol is very great, and when he did consume alcohol he became purely insane. For these reasons I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from alcohol.

  17. I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from cholera because he expected to die before the conclusion of his trip. He said that "it is no use to reason with me now; I must die. I have no desire to live..." He was so ill that he had no desire to live and he even felt that he must die. Not to mention that he was also addicted to alcohol too. With these reasons, I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from cholera.

  18. People have many suspicions about how Poe died. I believe his death was caused my his alcohol problem." I don't feel much hope ". After Poe's wife died, he became suicidel. Which probably caused him to drink.

  19. There were many theories of how Edgar Allen Poe died, but I believe that he died due to his alcohol/drug addiction problem. He was found in a bar-room, dressed in clothes not like his own that a friend almost didn't recognized him. He couldn't talk or walk and he was completely dazed with liquor. Since he couldn't walk, he had to be carried out. This clearly tells us that he had a drinking problem because while in the hospital, he was unconscious and after he awoke, he was sweating and trembling. He couldn't remember what happened to him and he thought his wife was still alive. After that, he died.

  20. i think that the reason that poe died is because of his alcohol and drug addiction because they drugs he might have taken would have been deadly so that's what i think happened to Edgar Allen Poe.

  21. poe's death was from drugs and alcohol

  22. Edgar Allen Poe died from a overdose in drugs or alcohol because he had a heart problem since he was born. Edgar probably wasn't expecting to come home from his trip. Also he could have died from a brain tumor because he said" I can barely hold the pen" that is what I think what happened to Edgar Allen Poe.

  23. I think Poe's death was from in his mental state and the consumption of alcohol. The doctor states "that he could be raised up from a brain fever, brought on by extreme suffering of mind and body…sedatives even had to be administered with caution". Also that "Poe arrives at the hospital unconscious and remains in that condition from 5:00 pm until 3:00 am. When he awakens, he trembles and sweats profusely until the following day. This is followed by “constant talking” with “imaginary objects.” He is unable to remember what has happened to him, where he has been, or what has become of his luggage. He thinks his wife is waiting for him in Richmond, but he was not married at the time. During another period of violent delirium, he calls the name “Reynolds” repeatedly before he calms down and dies. One the from before was before he went to the bar. He wasn't in as bad of a condition as after the consumption of alcohol. I believe that Poe's death was from his mental condition and the consumption of alcohol.

  24. Everyone can believe something different but I think the most reasonable answer is that he died because drug addiction.Poe was found in the Bar-Room not dressed in his clothes his one friend didn't notice it was him. He couldn't talk or walk because he was so drunk. He had to be carried out so he went to the hospital. He still taught he wife was still alive.

  25. I believe Edgar Allen Poe died due to an illness. In his letter to his mother-in-law, Poe states that he has "been so ill--have had cholera, or spasms quiet as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen"(Poe). Poe complained about being sick. He felt so ill and expected to die. Cholera may have been the fatal disease that led to Edgar Allen Poe's death.

  26. Cholera is an infection of the small intestine by some strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. That is what I think happened to Poe. If you look at the definition of Cholera that I put up there. That sounds exactly what happened to him. If it's not that it is definiteltly that he was drugged. I feel bad for Poe his life was already bad enough. His wife died. He just died.

  27. I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from a possible brain tumor, with his irregular heartbeat. I think he knew that he was going do die soon and he had nothing to do about it..."I did not feel much hope" (Poe). His heart was also bad, only beating ten regular beats.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think Poe died form a brain tumor reason being he had a possible brain tumor because he had an irregular heat beat. ''I didn't feel much hope, that he could be raised up from a brain fever..." His condition was so bad that his heat beat only ten regular beats after which it suspended or intermitted. ( as doctors say).

  29. I believe that Edgar Allen Poe died from alcohol overdose. Edgar Allen Poe suffered from a condition where drinking/consuming alcohol causes issues like hallucinations. "For more than ten days i was totally deranged"(Poe). Poe was "deranged" for ten days, meaning he was going insane, and probably drank alcohol in his sorrow. Considering Poe's health condition, the alcohol easily could have killed him.

  30. I believe Poe died from chlorea. He was very ill and was expected to die. Edgar suffered from this disease that was very deathly. This theory is the most reasonable one to lead to edgar A. Poe's death

    ReplyDelete
  31. Poe had terrible brain tumor as his heart wasn't normal. Also he was going through tough time with his wife being passed away. He might have had to much alcohol intake which led him to be very ill and cause Poe's death. I think Poe passed away with too much alcohol intake.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe that Poe died from an illness. "He was very sad,and complained of being quite sick." Poe was expierencing a sickness that made him feel sad and it caused him to complain a lot. "I felt his pulse, and found he had considerable fever, and did not think it probable that he would be able to start the next morning." Poe's sickness was getting really bad to the point of where he had a really high fever and he barley had no pulse.Worst of all many believed he wouldn't make it to the next morning.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Poe died from illness and depression of his wives passing. He also had to much alchohol intake which mad matters worse for poe in leading to his death

  34. I believe that Edgar A. Poe died from chlorea. In Poe's letter to his mother-in-law, he states that he has "been so ill--have had chlorea, or spasms quiet as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen"(Poe). Poe knew he was going to was going to die. Chlorea could have been one of the many factors that led to his death.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think the Edgar Allen Poe died from having the illness chlorea. In the letter he says that he is "so ill--have had chlorea, or spasms quite as bad..."(Poe). Even though Poe was depressed about the losses, i do not think he died from drinking too much because he claims that "i was not drinking one drop"(Poe). Many people have different ideas about Poe's death but in my opinion, it was because of sickness.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe Edgar Allen Poe died from both cholera and a state of mental illness. First off in a letter to his mother in law he introduces how sick he actually is ”I have been so ill--have had the cholera, or spasms quite as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen” (Poe). He says he is extremely ill, typically when people believe they're on the verge of death their sickness is dreadfully unpleasant. Also, Poe was terribly depressed after his wife died and most likely had no hope in his life considering his lack of children and other relatives. Modern world studies have shown that a person's mental state could have many effects on their ability to heal. If Edgar Allen Poe was depressed and became ill he may not have willed himself to live, therefore he died not only because he especially ill but he no longer wanted to live a life of loneliness so his body did not work as hard to heal itself. All in all I believe Poe’s death was caused by cholera and an ill state of mind.

  37. poe died from his illness because it took over his brain and killed him. he had ''attacks'' which drinking will not do. poe was coincided a good drinker back then. if he wanted to kill his self he probably would wave done it when his wife died.

  38. I believe Edgar Allen Poe died from a brain tumor. "Poe had a pre-existing condition, possibly a brain tumor. His heartbeat was irregular and he could not consume alcohol without producing insanity." It is also likely that Edgar knew he had the brain tumor as it states that he did not plan to come back. He may have gone to Richmond to die there in peace. Although Edgar could have died from Cholera as he stated that he had been suffering from it. This is what i think Edgar Allen Poe could have died from.

  39. I think Poe died from a brain tumor because he was in so much stress. He also didnt take really good care of himself. He was expected to die before his trip because of his "condition". Thats why I think he died from a brain tumor

    ReplyDelete
  40. I believe he's lived with a brain tumor in his frontal cortex that was growing rapidly and causing his psychotic issues. He may have also gotten a concussion when he was robbed. Which could have ruptured a blood vessel causing a fatal aneurysm.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe that Edgar A Poe died from a brain tumor. The text states "Poe had a pre-existing condition possibly a brain tumor. His heartbeat was irregular, and he could not consume alcohol without producing insanity. Over all Poe did not die due to alcohol just a bracing tumor that he did not know of.

  42. I believe Edgar Allan Poe died from a drug or alcohol-induced hallucinations. In a report by the New York Herald released two days after Poe's death- it stated that, "On last Wednesday, election day, he was found near the Fourth ward polls laboring under an attack of mania a potu, and in a most shocking condition." (Herald) This means that Poe must have overdosed on a substance and was sent into this state. This ultimately caused his death due to his body not being able to control all the harmful substances within him and eventually shutting down.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe Poe's death was caused by alcohol and drugs. In the article, "Poe was found laboring under an attack in mania a potu. Potu is madness from drinking; delirium tremens. So basically it is a alcohol and drug problem. To bring this all to a conclusion it is easy to infer that Poe's death was caused by alcohol and drugs.

  44. I think that poe died because was useing drugs and alcohol. He became mad from doing all this bad stuff. He also died wried way.So this is what I have to say about Poes death.

  45. I believe Poe died from a drug or alcohol induced hallucination. In an article from the New York Herald stated " On last Wednesday, Election Day,he was found near Forth ward polls laboring under an attack mania a potu, and in a most shocking condition" (Herald). The text means that Poe could have overdosed. His death was probably by his body not reacting to the harmful drugs
